Hearing Loss Simulator

To help you better understand the effects of hearing loss, Audibel has developed a comprehensive hearing loss simulator. This online tool simulates the cognitive differences associated with hearing loss. It illustrates how a person may interpret speech from a variety of sources at varying degrees of impairment.

Besides demonstrating the obvious audio differences of hearing loss, the simulator also shows how the microscopic cilia (hair cells) of the cochlea fail to function when damaged. Take a moment to examine how the healthy cells stand tall and immediately detect and send sound impulses to the brain. Note the abnormal reaction of the damaged cells.

The simulator provides the most realistic representation when using headphones or standalone computer speakers set to audible volume levels. To calibrate your headphones or speakers, select "Child" and "No Loss" and press the play button.

If you can clearly hear the stated phrase, your volume is set to the appropriate level. If not, adjust your volume until you can comfortably hear the stated phrase.

Please note that the hearing loss simulator is for demonstration purposes. It is intended only to help you better understand how speech comprehension can be affected by hearing impairment.
