Prescription vs. Over-The-Counter (OTC) Hearing Aids

Hearing aids come in two different types: Prescription and Over-The-Counter. The difference is the necessity of service and the fitting by a licensed hearing professional.

Prescription Hearing Aids

The traditional approach to hearing aids, prescription devices require a licensed hearing professional who matches the amplification output of different pitches from the hearing aids and the patient’s audiometric needs. To fit this style of hearing aid, service visits and detailed measurements are required. This product is still the most common style of hearing aid fit today.

Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids

A new type of hearing aid that is available to you, the patient, without a hearing test or the assistance of a hearing professional.
